Changing your name after marriage

Congratulations gorgeous people!

All the planning and dreaming has paid off, and you are now legally married – woop woop!

Once your paperwork has been lodged with NSW Births, Deaths & Marriages, you should receive your Official Marriage Certificate within approximately2 weeks.

However, I always say - if it hasn’t reached you within that time, to let me know so I can follow up for you.

But let’s assume you have it now - yay! With your official marriage certificate from BDM, the process to change your name is as follows. Hopefully this handy how-to makes it as easy as it possibly can be!

Step 1

Take your official certificate to Service NSW with your drivers license, and they will automatically change that straight into your new name

Step 2 (this can also be Step 1...)

Take your official certificate to a Medicare / Centrelink administration centre, along with a valid form of ID in addition to your medicare card, and they will then change your Medicare over into your new name.

(Note you don't have to do this after your license, you can do this first if you prefer)

Or if you prefer, this can be done virtually - just email

mes@servicesaustralia.gov.au

with your current medicare number and expiry, date of birth, and full (maiden name) as well as copy of your marriage certificate, and they should send out a new card to your nominated address.

Step 3

Once those documents are updated, you can easily update your passport, name with the ATO, bank details, utility providers, and anyone else that needs to know as your core documentation will be established under your new name.

But - as always - I’m there to support you, so if I’ve got you married, feel free to reach out at anytime and I’ll see how I can help!
